The US Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision on Wednesday is unlikely to provide any new impetus for gold prices, according to Carsten Fritsch, commodity analyst at Commerzbank AG. Gold prices could rise if "the door remains open for interest rate cuts", however, the considerable uncertainty surrounding the duration of the West Asia conflict and the disruption to oil supplies are likely to make the Fed cautious about "making too clear a statement on the future interest rate path," Fritsch said in a report Tuesday.
The gold price is struggling to fulfil its role as a safe haven in times of crisis," Fritsch said. Gold prices have fallen around 5% since the start of the war in Iran two and a half weeks ago. A significant rise in the dollar index has provided headwinds for gold prices.

India's first overhaul of its national accounts in over a decade has sprung a few shocks and surprises, but it underpinned that growth remains buoyant and is now more stable. While the new GDP data strengthens the growth outlook for the Indian economy, it has complicated the government's fiscal math.
The statistics ministry Friday released the new GDP series with 2022-23 (Apr-Mar) as the base year, replacing FY12. Data based on the new series showed that India's GDP grew faster than expected in the December quarter at 7.8%, driven by strong consumption on the back of cuts in the goods and services tax and festival season demand. Growth was also supported by manufacturing and services sectors.

India's private sector activity expanded at the strongest rate in three months in February with quicker increases in total new orders and international sales during the month, S&P Global said Friday. This prompted higher staff recruitment and scaling up of output which, in combination, made businesses more optimistic about growth prospects. The HSBC Flash Composite Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 59.3 in February from 58.4 in January.
Activity picked up in the manufacturing sector at a higher clip than the services sector. The flash manufacturing PMI rose to a four-month high of 57.5 in February from the final print of 55.4 in January. The flash services PMI fell to 58.4 in February from 58.5 in January. A PMI reading of more than 50 denotes expansion in activity from the previous month, while a print below 50 indicates contraction.

The first update to India's Consumer Price Index in 11 years has confirmed what economists and the Reserve Bank of India have been saying even under the outdated CPI basket: underlying inflation pressures in the economy are low, but they are set to rise ahead.
Data released last week showed retail inflation was 2.75% in January, according to the new CPI series, which uses 2024 as the base year. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation Thursday released the new CPI series, which widens coverage and tracks prices of 358 items, sharply up from 299 items in the old series.
Headline inflation in January was above the lower end of the RBI's tolerance band of 2-6%, a first since June 2025. Headline inflation averaged 2.2% in 2025, according to both the new and old series. On average, there was no difference in headline inflation over the last 12 years between the two CPI series, according to Informist's calculations of the back-series data provided by the government.

Gold prices are expected to fluctuate around the $5,000 per troy ounce mark in the near term, as uncertainty over US interest rates and easing geopolitical tensions limit further upside, according to Commerzbank. At the start of this week, gold briefly climbed above the $5,000 per troy ounce threshold, but prices have since retreated towards $4,900 per ounce, indicating difficulty in sustaining significant gains, it said.
The German lender said the metal's struggle to extend its rally is partly linked to the uncertain US interest rate outlook. "Although expectations of US rate cuts - as reflected in Fed Funds Futures - have increased in recent weeks, stronger-than-expected US labour market data released last Wednesday pointed to greater resilience in the economy than previously assumed." This, Commerzbank noted, could reduce the urgency for rapid interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, tempering support for non-yielding assets such as gold.

Spot gold prices fell Tuesday tracking futures contracts on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India and the COMEX due to thin trading as major markets are shut for public holidays, analysts said. China and many other Asian countries' markets are shut Tuesday for Lunar New Year celebrations. Markets in the US were closed on Monday for Presidents' Day. Prices were also down due to easing geopolitical tensions.
In Mumbai, the spot price of gold of 99.9% purity was INR 151,195 per 10 grams on Tuesday, down from INR 154,080 per 10 grams on Monday, said Kumar Jain, spokesperson for the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. Dealers are offering a discount of INR 1,750 per 10 grams on spot gold prices, Nitin Kedia, national general secretary of All India Jewellers & Goldsmith Federation, said.
